The Diaspora Magazine – ISSUE 02
2020 FASHION TRENDING IN AFRICA
African women are known for their stylish and colorful fashion sense. The latest 2020 African
fashion is simply fabulous. It has fascinated and conquered the taste of numerous fashion
designers. These styles include head wraps, off shoulder wears, palazzo trouser, side slit dresses,
and denim jeans.
In the early days, African women adorned themselves in beautiful clothing, cowries, beads, and
colorful body paintings but in recent times, it has changed into a more modern concept that still
looks breath-taking.
People can’t help but imagine what fashion will be like in 10 or 20 years from now. Whatever
the case may be, African women will definitely not be left behind.
AFRICA THE FUTURE OF FINTECH SPACE IN THE WORLD
Fintech technology is transforming the world around us. Africa remains the best example of an
environment that thrives and benefit from the Fintech industry. Johannesburg, Nigeria, Nairobi,
and Kampala were the four African cities that were identified among the top 100 Fintech
ecosystems globally. These rankings were compiled based on several factors including the
number of Fintech startups and hubs in the cities. Many Western industry leaders like Jack
Dorsey thinks Africa is a very lucrative continent to push their businesses.
Fintech in Africa promises lots of opportunities and changes. Hopefully, Africans in the diaspora
will be part of this trend.
CORONA VIRUS VS EBOLA
When comparing Coronavirus to the Ebola virus, there are just very few similarities. There are
no officially published origin of the Corona Virus but a recent study points bats to be the most
likely hosts. Ebola virus is considered to be more severe and fatal than the Coronavirus.
It is evident that any form of disease outbreak will impact on the economic sector of the affected
regions. For a country to face reduced tourism, decrease in agricultural production, less trading
and high rate of unemployment, it will take major intervention to save them. To avoid these
impending doom, its best people played their own part in helping to curb the transmission of the
diseases by avoiding unprotected contact and steering clear of wild animals.
BRIDE PRICE AND DOWRY ACROSS CULTURAL LINES
The predominance of dowry and bride-price practices dates back to centuries of human existence
as a way of meeting the requirements of marriage.
Bride-price is the money or asset given by the groom to the bride’s family while dowry is a token
or gift to the bridegroom for taking up the responsibility of caring for the bride for a lifetime.
Most West African countries practice bride-price while some part of Asia and then Britain
practice dowry.
Understanding these cultural systems can be very challenging given the complex nature of the
societies in which they occur. Bride price still waxes strong, but the practice of dowry dwindles
with each passing day because of the governmental laws against the practice.
NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY HAVE PUSHED AFROBEAT MUSIC TO GLOBAL
SCALE AND THEY CONTINUE TO MAKE WAVES
Gone are the days when Nigerian musicians struggled to be identified internationally. Now, they
have pushed Afrobeat so far up that it has made a big bang effect all across the globe and there is
no going back.
Most people have confessed to finding themselves immersed in a sonic groovy journey by the
pulsating Afrobeats music. Many Nigerian artists like Davido, Wizkid, OLamide e.t.c with their
unique style of songs have made Nigerian music a globally recognized sound of distinct vibes.
This great feat could not have been achieved without the use of mega music beats, advanced
digital cameras, and befitting backgrounds for music video shoots. We still expect more success
from the Nigerian Music Industry and we pray the tides will never subside.
ZOZIBINI TUNZI – MISS UNIVERSE 2019 WINNER
Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa was crowned as the winner of the 2019 Miss Universe
competition on the 7th of December. This was an outstanding victory since Tunzi is the
pageant’s first black winner in eight years. When crowned, she took a moment to speak on and
celebrate the “Black Girl Magic”.
Tunzi’s victory is a relief as it reminds Africans that the vision of someone being beautiful and
irresistible for pure and natural beauty is not only about being light-skinned.
Tunzi is an advocate for pure and natural beauty. She has shown African women that beauty can
be anything whether black or white. Africans should be proud because they are beautiful the way
they are.
